Spa pool causes Legionnaires disease in New Zealand
Two separate cases of Legionnaires disease were caused by a spa pool in a motel in New Zealand, the Environmental Science and Research Department reported recently. A 79 year-old man and a 65 year-old woman both contracted the disease from the same spa pool, but not at the same time. Research showed that both cases were caused by the same strain as that found in the spa pool. The cases were six months apart.
The owner was required to close the pool and was ordered to take a course in pool maintenance and disease control. There is no mention of damages being ordered or compensation paid. The ESR stated that all pools and spa pools in particular need to be regarded as high risk of Legionella and managed accordingly.
The case is a classic Legionella tale: poor understanding of risks, low standard of maintenance and no monitoring regime in place, added to high risk demographic leading to reputational risk. It would be interesting to know if compensation was paid, but that is also classic no information being available.
