Legionella serogroup 1 confirmed as the cause of Bronx outbreak
New York City officials confirmed that the species of the Legionella bacterium that caused the Bronx outbreak was serogroup 1. This species of the Legionella pneumophila bacterium has caused all serious outbreaks of the disease since Legionnaires disease was first identified in 1976.
The Hydrosense Legionella rapid test is highly specific in detecting Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1.
The authorities also identified the source of the outbreak as the Opera House Hotel in the Bronx. The management of the highly praised, luxury, boutique hotel expressed their disappointment and dismay at the news. They claimed that they had followed all procedures, that their water system was only 2 years old and well maintained. Management further stated that they would do more than the official requirement in future.
This tragic outcome suggests that a more pro-active management is required and that rapid on-site testing should probably be part of that management.
